Science

We use this On-line Science Textbook for Grades 1-5, and like it a lot.

We usually do two 90 minute classes a week.

I read the lessons before-hand and prepare questions for him in our Science notebook for reinforcement. I also write our own lesson and unit reviews.

 

 

We Compliment our Science Learning with

Unit Studies

Unit Studies, or Main Projects (as we call them), are a great way to compliment a Science textbook.

We do one every 1.5 – 2 months.

Each project is developed around one central theme that particularly interests us.

It can be about anything – butterflies, the human brain, cars, deserts, dogs, being a cowboy.

Pretty much any theme you choose will carry you through science, geography, reading, writing, researching, arts&crafts – and sometimes even math, religions and politics.

If you’re new to homeschooling, a fun Unit Study is a great way to start your homeschool adventure.


Main Project – Dinosaurs


Our first Main Project was about dinosaurs.

We researched mainly from this really cool Dinosaur Site.

We took notes on all the information we found.

With our collected data, we created a big book with pages on the Mesozoic Era and its Periods; different Theories of Extinction; and, of course, several different dinosaurs.

When we were done with our book, he gave a presentation for our friends and family.

He used a globe to point out the different regions where the dinosaurs lived.

We learned investigation skills, presentation skills and started to get an idea of just how old our planet is.

We did the research bulk of it in different ways:

1. I read a page from the Dino-site, prepared questions and then have him read the page out loud and answer the questions in our Dino-notebook (a good way to start)

2. He read the page by himself and prepared questions for me to answer (more advanced)

3. We read together and took notes (great way for him to learn to choose relevant information for note-taking)

For the book-making we:

  1. Printed out a black and white picture of the dinosaur of the day, to color in and cut out
  2. On a big piece of construction paper, did plant rubbings for the background – we looked for plants like ferns or other plants that are similar to the prehistoric plants that the herbivorous dinos ate
  3. Finally, we pasted on the dinosaur and the chosen information on strips of paper

We would complete the process for each dinosaur before moving on to the next one. By the end of it, we had a 12-page book, bound together by wire rings (that he made) and a very entertaining presentation. He gave two presentations – was very nervous for the first one, but the experience helped him make his second presentation much more expressive and theatrical.

Main Project – The Solar System

For our second Unit Study we’re working on the Solar System.

Researching for Main Project

A love for learning goes hand in hand with good research skills. Teaching your child to investigate things he or she is interested in, sows the seed for self-directed life-long learning.

And don’t forget to GO OUTSIDE

and find Science all around you

Studying from our textbook we often come across things that my son already knows from real life experience. He already knew the parts of a plant from the plants in our gardens and what plants need to grow. The homeschooled child can spend much more time outside in Nature learning by observing.

We live in rural Guatemala where the rainy season is always exciting with hurricanes, landslides, and highways collapsing.

Nevertheless, it brings us a river that runs behind our house.

We build dams, retaining walls, sand traps and have picnics.

This is real Earth Science experience!

The perfect compliment for our recent studies on sedimentary and metamorphic rock.
